Okiagari Daruma Workshop – A Celebration of Resilience and Spring

Join us for a hands-on workshop creating your own Okiagari Daruma, a roly-poly doll rooted in Japanese tradition and symbolism.

Inspired by the idea of “fall seven times, stand up eight,” this special spring edition Daruma is designed by visual artist Sleepless Kao, incorporating seasonal cherry blossom motifs that celebrate renewal and well-being.

The concept for this workshop originated from Masami Hanashiro of Vancouver Okinawa Taiko. Together, Masami and Sleepless Kao will guide participants through the cultural background and symbolism of Daruma and Okiagari-koboshi, while teaching how to create and decorate a meaningful, hand-painted roly-poly doll.

Participants will learn about Japanese traditions of wish-making and resilience, and create a charming Daruma to carry personal intentions for health, strength, and new beginnings.

No experience necessary. All materials provided.Suitable for adults and youth (add age range if needed).
