Tree Talks & Walks: Nitobe Memorial Garden
Saturday, April 19th at 1:30PM-3:00PM
Leader: Douglas Justice
Language of instruction: English
Douglas’s walk will cover many of the dozen or so ornamental cherries planted at UBC’s Nitobe Memorial Garden. This traditional Japanese tea and stroll garden is the perfect setting to see cherry trees in bloom. The meeting point will be on the sidewalk opposite (i.e., facing) the Fraser Parkade, away from the Nitobe Garden entrance.
Please ensure you have read our new registration policy before signing up for each walk. Limited spots available.
Important note: Regular admission fees are required to visit UBC Nitobe Memorial Garden. Check the Nitobe Memorial Garden website for details. Ticket registration is still required to participate in the Tree Talks and Walk at this location, but Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival will waive the $10 registration fee.
Meet Douglas Justice:
Douglas Justice is Associate Director, Horticulture & Collections at UBC Botanical Garden. He teaches in UBC’s Landscape Architecture program and in the Garden’s Horticulture Training Program. Douglas’s early passion for plants led him into tropicals, then outdoor plants, nursery work and gardening, then degrees in horticulture and botany, which spurred him to pursue a career in teaching and public garden management. He wrote the handbook Ornamental Cherries in Vancouver with the help of Vancouver Cherry Blossom Festival volunteers, and among other horticultural writing, authored the text for the iOS mobile app, Vancouver Trees. A volunteer with the Cherry Blossom Festival since its inception, Douglas first became interested in ornamental cherries as a teenager, wandering Vancouver’s then much less-crowded, cherry-lined streets.
This event is made possible with support from RIZE.
